Practical Evening

As we were unable to have the session with the models Sue had arranged a Christmas themed evening as a prelude to the Chairman’s night coming up in January. The evening started with Sue presenting some of her own “Christmasy” images she had taken (which as ever caused some laughter with Sue taking it all on the chin as she usually does). Remember though, the last laugh will be on her as she’s going to be judging our own Christmas images! As the rain had virtually cleared some of us wandered down to the Christmas Wonderland in Carmarthen Park along with cameras, triggers and tripods to try get started on a collection of images for the competition. Others remained in the warm and experimented

Judging of PDI Round 2

51 images were presented to Ed Cloutman for assessment. Detailed critique was given on composition and execution, the points he awarded were, in Ed’s opinion, a secondary matter. He appreciated situations where the photographer added their own input to an image, he did not value what he called snapshots. He also advocated cloning out distractions and cropping for impact. Lighting in his view is an essential part of creating an image. He believes that it is hard to generate an impactful image in harsh overhead sunlight, although there was one exception during the evening, an image that he appeared to like, but this was given a low score. In sports images the visibility of eyes was seen as imp

Ian Ledgard - Stars & Galaxies

Ian Ledgard - Stars & Galaxies 15 November 2018 With Christmas fast approaching Sue had been investigating venues for our Christmas party. As we were unable to have a session of Indoor Bowls an alternative suggestion was to go 10 Pin Bowling. They do a Christmas special for £20 which includes not only 1 hour bowling but a 2 course meal including a drink. A minimum of 20 people per party is required. The planned date is the 20 December - Sue will need to know as soon as possible if we have enough people interested (partners of club members welcome). Please contact Sue by phone, email or Facebook to let her know if you are interested. This week our speaker was Ian Ledgard, member of Towy

Layers in Photoshop

This week we had a presentation from our own Jo, who aimed to explain about using “Layers” in Photoshop to create composite images. Jo explained to those novices in the group, that Layers are a very useful tool within Photoshop and can play an important role in post production. They are used to allow you to work on individual parts of an image while not affecting other parts. They allow you to modify your image, add text, change colour, put two or more pictures on the same page and more without modifying your original photo. As you get more experienced in using this powerful tool you can rearrange each layer, group them together, link them together and remove them. The Layers panel will a

Carmarthen 5 Way Battle

Carmarthen 5 Way Battle This evening we held the first of our external competitions where we invited four local clubs, Kidwelly, Pontyberem, Towy Valley and Trostre/Velindre to join us in submitting 8 digital images each for consideration by an external judge. The judge was an old friend of our club Harry Gardiner from Tenby who has judged competitions and given talks for us many times in the past. Harry is interested in drawing and painting as well as photography and deliberated on details, story, composition, subject, tones and emotion as well as the technical ability of the photographer when deciding the scores. Although some national judges stretch the marks in these types of competiti
