Print Comp Round 3
The judge for tonight’s 3rd print round was Gary Shinner, LRPS EFIAP/b EPSA AWPR BPSA. We had 37 entries for Gary to judge, a really good amount for a print competition.
Gary commented that he had really enjoyed looking at all the images and that they were all of a very high standard. He gave a few helpful suggestions on how to improve some of the images. One comment was that it helps to reduce the size of an image if some if it is a little soft in places. He also stated that the mounting on the whole was very good.
As usual judging was out of 20, with the lowest score being 13 and an average score of 15. Rather than just running through the images in chronological order, Gary had kept back his top 12 to show together at the end. So here are the top 12 in reverse order with the judge’s comments and the author:
A long way to go for some twigs in the snow - Jeff Fugler - very brave for a minimalistic image, very difficult subject. The bluish colour emphasises the cold.
Beach Rider - Nicky Rhodes - Great action capture, excellent details, enjoyed the unison between horse and rider, good detail of the mane and of the sand coming off the horse’s hooves.
Drops on the Screen - Andy Rhodes - Unique imagery and tonal range, almost sci-fi feel, a good challenge for a judge.
Fort William, Scotland - Jo Debenham-Ansty - Atmospheric, dramatic light, maybe a slight crop off the base, love the way you are swept through the image.
Mixing my Drinks - Nicky Rhodes - vivid, bright and eye catching, maybe show a little bit more of the base with the reflections, loved the glittery blue background, great title.
Mountain Views - Jeff Fugler - Framing and treatment helps this landscape, like the dappled effect of the clouds, very pleasing image.
The Green Mile - Jo Debenham-Ansty - Good emotion coming through, love the story, green colour used to good effect.
Top of the Bridge - Jeff Fugler - Strong symmetry and monochrome quality. Very simple but effective graphic shot. Good balance in the image.
Wishing for Warmer Weather - Nicky Rhodes - another great, strong image, excellent details on the bird’s plumage. Delightful image of the wagtail.
Cable Ties - Jeff Fugler - Very crisp, clean and punchy, great strong lines, best mono image of the night.
Onward Bound - Jo Debenham-Ansty - difficult subject made to look easy, great eye contact with the dog, eyes are delightful as are the alertness of the ears. Shows great connection between subject and photographer.
The Winning Streak - Nicky Rhodes - Creative, innovative, excellent in execution, challenging.
Very well done to Nicky the winner tonight, and to Jo and Jeff and of course Andy an additional challenger to these 3.
Thank you to Gary for his excellent judging and to everyone who entered.
Next week, 8 February, is an internal night of Table Top Photography - bring along some items, props and equipment. Nicky has challenged us to have a go at creating her winning image from tonight!
