PDI Round 1
The judge for this evening’s first round of competitions was Dennis Russ, a member of 3 camera clubs - Swansea, Morriston and Cymru Monochrome. With a fantastic 55 entries Dennis had a good range of images to judge and made a good start, keeping the first 3 images back to score at the end!
Dennis kept up a good pace giving his critique on the images entered. His critique was concise but he gave some helpful hints and tips. He gave a wide range of scores from 13 up to 20, scoring 2 images with 20, but giving his overall favourite out of these two top scorers.
As with most judges, Dennis emphasised that his scores reflected his opinion and no author should be disheartened by the score given. He hoped that his feedback was helpful. Being a keen monochrome photographer Dennis gave some helpful tips on using Silver Efx Pro, encouraging us not to just use the presets available but to use the the Neutral preset and then use the sliders to create our own effects. He also suggested searching on Google for Nik presets that have been created by photographers using the software.
Here are the images that gained the top 3 scores:
Scoring 18 and Highly Commended were:
A Bridge too Far John Starzewski
Abandoned Caroline Starzewski
Chick Flick Nicky Rhodes
High and Dry Howard Williams
Tour of Britain Alan Fitzpatrick
Unwanted DM’s Maria Pearce
Scoring 19 were:
70 Up Alan Fitzpatrick
Reflections Barry Jones
And the 2 top scorers with 20 were
Haukland Jeff Fugler
Sleeping Worker Bee Jo Debenham-Ansty - which was also the judges favourite.
Well done to Jo and Jeff for their top score and thank you to everyone for entering their images and thank you to Dennis for his interesting and informative judging.
Alan Harries advised us that the date had been set for A Day with Magnum Photographer Martin Parr in Tenby for 30 March 2019 - see the link below.
Alan also mentioned that the Lensculture website had a good free feature entitled It’s All Dreaming.
Next week is a Critique Night - an interactive internal evening for members to show off their work and seek feedback from fellow members. Please bring along up to 5 images either prints or PDI.
